In New Zealand your course of study is made up of compulsory subjects, (subjects you have to take), and option subjects, (subjects that you choose to take). As you move up through the year levels the number of subjects you study becomes less but the time you spend on each subject increases. Also, as you move up through the year levels, the number of option subjects you take increases and by the time you reach Year 13 there are no compulsory subjects.
